Day 15: Brooks Defyance 4, Will Kirk

Will currently wears the Brooks Defyance 4's. He got them because they are similar in style to the Asics Fortitude, his previous shoe. He wanted to try something new when he began to experience pain in his heel about 60 minutes into runs (the pain hasn't gone away entirely, but he said he is been able to manage it better). Will said, "I have pretty flat feet, but I don't necessarily overpronate so much and the wide base of the shoe accomodates my flat feet well without providing too much motion control and stability."

He likes the fact that the Brooks Defyance 4's are relatively lightweight, especially compared to the Asics Fortitude. They also fit his feet well and are made with biodegradable cushioning. Will puts an average of 60-65 miles on them each week. He said that they are a really good all purpose shoe for anything from speed work to long runs, but he thinks they are better for the longer types of runs such as threshold runs and 60+ minute runs.

Day 14: Brooks Glycerin 6, Josh Bowling

Josh got his first pair of Brook's Glycerin 6 because of a friends recommendation and he found his second pair! There are a few key features that he likes about them.  They are a little on the heavy side, however he said, "the redeeming quality is their comfort."  He also said, "I can easily say they are one of the most comfortable trainers i've ever worn." The comfort is due to the thick heel and slightly upward curve in the fore foot which provides for a smooth strike and toe off.

Josh typically runs 70 miles per week.  He enjoys using these shoes on trail runs and tempo runs on the road.  The cushioning and stability that the Brook's Glycerin 6 provide make them perfect for the uneven terrain of trail running and the hard shocks received from road workouts.

This blog is closing in on 1,000 views. I would like to thank everyone who has continued to read this blog and support my project. Unfortunately, due to school constraints I will be dropping the blog from 30 Shoes In 30 Days to 15 Shoes In 15 Days. I will continue to post on the blog, but the updates will be much less frequent. I hope that you will all check out the last two blog entries!!!

Day 13: Asics GEL-DS Racer VI, Andrew Giordano

Andrew got his Asics GEL-DS Racer VI's over the summer.  He was about to go on a run with one of his teammates, but he forgot his shoes at home.  His friend had them in his car and gave them to Andrew because they didn't fit.

It was a nice coincidence because Andrew was looking to start moving to lightweight shoes because of the barefoot running craze that the CNU distance team had gone through the previous Outdoor season.  He put the GEL-DS Racer's on and he said, "they felt like clouds on my feet."  They have never given him any injuries or anything of that nature.

The key features that he enjoys about them are that they are lightweight (technically flats) and super comfortable.  They run a little small, so he got them a 1/2 to 1 full size bigger than his normal training shoe.  Andrew runs 60-70 miles a week in them and wears them for everything; recovery, progressive, long runs and track and hill workouts.

He said, "this is by far my favorite shoe that I have ever put on."  Thanks for your input Andrew!!

Day 12: Mizuno Wave Rider 13, Will Zak

Will wears the Mizuno Wave Rider 13's.  He got them because he had heard a lot of hype about the shoes from his friends.  The Wave Rider 13's are the first pair of Mizunos that he had ever worn.  He's worn Brooks and Asics for the majority of his running career.  He has had some trouble in the past with Brooks, but finds Asics good for running.  Will has found his Mizunos to be a nice change.

He said that his favorite features are their light weight, the level of comfort that they provide, and the fact that they are form fitting to his foot.  During Cross Country, Will ran 50-60 miles a week and the shoes held up through the whole season.  He has found that the Wave Rider 13's are perfect for any running scenario, but he prefers to use them for longer runs.

Will recommends that people out there who have never worn Mizunos before try them out.

Day 11: Saucony Ride 2, Eric Ginsburg

Eric runs in the Saucony Ride 2's.  He started to run in them after his high school coach gave him a pair and he has loved them ever since.  He's run in them for every run for two years straight.  A good thing that he found about the shoe is that they haven't caused any injuries.  Also, Eric said he never feels the ground when his feet hit the pavement.

Eric runs around 40 miles a week.  With his mileage he is able to make each pair last about a season and a half.  He said they are good for any type of running workout, ranging from 400s to 70 minute long runs.  He's found them to be on the heavy side, but it's only from the cushioning.  In his opinion, the cushioning counteracts the weight of the shoe.  He loves that he can run two a days in them and not have to worry about them falling apart.  Eric said that they are a really solid shoe, especially when you're running on the road a lot.

Day 10: Nike Free, Andrew Johnson

Andrew currently runs in the Nike Free's.  He gave them a try because he likes lightweight shoes and running barefoot.  The Nike Free's seemed like the perfect match for his preferences.  He's had three pairs of them so far and says that they are really comfortable for running.  

Andrew said that the best thing about them is their light weight.  He said, "towards the tail-end of a long run, when my legs start getting heavy, I don't feel like I run as clunky as I use to."  For track workouts, they're great because he gets a little bit of the barefoot feel without tearing up his feet by actually running barefoot.

He commented, "I put anywhere from 30-50 miles on them per week, depending on where I'm at in my training cycle."  He says they are the best for road runs, track workouts, and running on smooth paths.  On the other hand, they are bad for trails where there are rocks and roots because there's not too much support in the sole of the shoe.

In conclusion, the Nike Free's are great for people who have a neutral stride and like lightweight shoes.

Day 9: Asics GEL-Cumulus 12, Brian Huffman

Brian is primarily a middle distance runner but since he has been in college he has run Cross Country for two seasons in addition to Indoor and Outdoor Track. He's finally getting used to running at college and ready to start dropping his times. Brian was a member of CNU's record breaking 4x800 team this past Indoor Track season. It appears that things are looking up for Brian!

The Asics GEL-Cumulus 12 are the only pair of shoes that Brian has worn that have helped to prevent injury. He feels that they have great cushioning and a good amount of stability.  Brian runs on his toes. These shoes help to take a lot of the stress off the front of his foot when his feet create contact with the ground. They also spread the weight of his strides to the entire shoe instead of just the front.  

Unlike other shoes, these come in double wide. He likes the GEL-Cumulus 12 because of this feature and because of their high durability. Many of the shoes that Brian has tried in the past have broken down after 80-100 miles because of the way he runs. Brian said that the GEL-Cumulus can handle 350-400 miles.  He uses them for all of his runs except for track workouts. He said they feel heavy for the faster pace work and that is why he switches to spikes. 

In conclusion, Brian said, "I don't trust any other shoes."

Day 8: Nike Lunarfly, Nike Zoom Victory Shaowei Tu

Shaowei has been a Freshman sensation this year. He came into Cross Country out of shape from the summer and before the end of Cross Country he had run a 16:46 5k. During Indoor he continued running strong, placing 2nd in the 400m at Indoor Conference. Two weeks later he followed up that showing at Virginia Tech where he ran the 800 in 1:56.74, ranking #5 on the all-time list at CNU. Shaowei has the speed needed to break 50 seconds in the 400 and 1:55 in the 800 this Outdoor season.

Shaowei uses a pair of Nike Lunarfly. He told me, "I bought them because they look super fly, and I'm a fly dude." He said that they are very comfortable and have an extremely soft bottom that make it feel like he is running on a soft surface at all times. He finds that the best features that the Nike Lunarfly provide are high performance for his runs and the reduction of pressure on his shins. He wears them for workouts and long runs, but finds that they are the best for 400 repeats or anything longer than a 400 on the track. On a side note, he's used them for tennis and they worked out pretty well.

In terms of competition spikes, Shaowei wears a pair of Nike Zoom Victory. He said, "they are amazing." This has been a general consensus among anyone who has ever tried them on. He recommends them for the 400 and up.  They are light and give good traction. He recommends them for mid distance runners.

Day 7: Asics GT-2110, Brooks Green Silence, Asics Piranha SP 3, Scott Wright

Scott is a sophomore at CNU. He is a tremendously hard worker; able to balance school, ROTC, and Cross Country and Track and Field practices. He's run Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor track, all for two seasons each at CNU. This year Scott has some notable personal records. During Cross Country he ran to an 8k PR of 29:38 and during Indoor he had a PR in the 3k with a time of 10:22. Scott looks poised to break both his Outdoor 800, 1500, and 5k PRs this upcoming season.

He has worn the Asics GT-2110 for a while and recently picked up a pair of Brooks Green Silence.

He uses the GT-2110's for the majority of his runs and the Green Silence for track workouts.  

The main feature that he looks for when deciding on what running shoes to purchase is the fact that the shoe is light. On an average week, Scott puts 50-60 miles on his shoes. Scott has never experienced any form of pain or injury while wearing either of the shoes. This is a great benefit.  His Asics GT-2110's have held up very well with the large quantity of miles that he runs with them.  Also, the Green Silence have become his favorite shoe for track workouts.  Scott finds that these shoes are the most beneficial to wear during his tempo and progressive runs.  He feels that they provide comfort for longer distance repeats and shorter speed work.

During races, just like Mac, Scott uses the Asics Piranha SP 3.  Again, he likes that they are a light weight shoe that are very versatile.  He uses them for all of his distances, ranging from the 800 all the way up to the 5k.

Day 6: Asics Piranha SP 3, Adidas Supernova Glide 2, Mac McCracken

Mac is a sensational runner who just completed a great Cross Country season. He was a member of the 2010 CNU NCAA DIII South/Southeast Cross Country Region Championship competing team. Mac has been a member of the CNU Cross Country and Track and Field Teams for four seasons each. He just used up his athletic eligibility and will be greatly missed by his team at both practices and in competition.

Mac uses the Asics Piranha SP 3 and Adidas Supernova Glide 2. The Piranha's are racing flats and the Supernova's are running shoes.  

Mac has had the Asics Piranha SP 3 flats for a little over a year. He got them when the CNU Track and Field team ordered shoes last year. He uses these shoes for the 3k and the 5k. Mac said, "These are one of my favorites just because they're really light." These shoes weigh only 4.6 ounces and help to maximize traction. You can see from his PRs above that he has had some great races in his Piranha SP 3. Also, he prefers flats over spikes because they don't hurt his calfs and shins as bad. 

Adidas Supernova Glide 2 are Macs choice for trainers. He got his first pair about 2 1/2 years ago for $90 from a store called 3Sports in Short Pump. He got them just because he needed a new pair of running shoes. He says that these shoes feel snug on his feet when he runs. Also, the heel part has great cushioning so that his knees don't take as much pounding. These shoes have 3D TORSION® element for a better heel-to-forefoot transition. This is the feature that helped to eliminate some of the discomfort that he had felt with his previous pair of trainers.

Day 5: Adidas, Brooks, Asics, and Nike, Kwarteng Asare

Kwarteng Asare is the top 200 and 400 meter runner at CNU. In addition to his running success, he excels in the jump events. During the 2010 Outdoor Track and Field season he provisionally qualified for both the long jump and triple jump.  He was ranked #18 in the nation for the TJ and #36 for the LJ. Asare had a great early indoor season this year, but was plagued by an illness at the end of the season. Asare has his eyes set on an automatic qualifier for DIII Nationals during outdoor in the TJ, LJ, 400, and 4x400!

Asare has used a number of different shoes for his trainers and event spikes. Recently, for his trainers he has used the Adidas Sequence 3 and Brooks Switch 4. For his event spikes he has used the Asics Japan Lite-Ning for running and Nike Zoom TJ for jumps.  

He said that he primarily used the Adidas Sequence 3 for his trainers, but he had a few problems in terms of slipping when he did starts for workouts. Asare has just switched to the Brooks Switch 4 and has been very pleased with their performance. Asare has found that they are light and comfortable, making them an ideal shoe for sprinting. They also grab the track underneath of him when he is sprinting so he gets that push off sensation with every stride. He said, "sometimes when i'm accelerating it feels like i'm actually running in sprinting spikes"

Asare has used these running spikes since high school. He said that the Asics Japan Lite-Ning are very comfortable for running since they give his foot freedom to move within the shoe. Also, they prevent sliding and keep his feet in the right place for maximum performance.

He jumps the triple and long jump in the Nike Zoom TJ. He used the Asics Cyber Jump Beijing in the recent past, but they hurt his heel and knee whenever he went to plant for a jump. They also limited the amount of jumps that he could take during the course of a meet. This turned him to using the Nike Zoom TJ which eliminated his previous problems because they have more heel support and are extremely light.

Day 5: Nike Zoom Structure Triax+ 14, Chris Lyford

Chirs Lyford is a middle/long distance runner.  He was a solid runner during the 2009 Cross Country Season, making it into the top 5 runners from CNU and competing in the NCAA DIII South/Southeast Cross Country Region Championship as a Freshman.  During the 2010 Cross Country Season, he made a strong debut when he posted a 6k time of 19:22.  Later on in the season he followed up his previous success by racing to a personal record in the 8k with a time of 26:36.

Chris wears a pair of Nike Zoom Structure Triax+ 14.  His main reasoning behind buying this shoe is that they are a pair of Nikes.  Chris has been wearing Nike running shoes for the majority of his running career.  He told me that he is now on his second pair of these shoes and despite the cost they were well worth the investment.

His first pair of Nike Zoom Structure Triax+ 14 held up for 3 months of consistent running.  Durability is a big factor when it comes to evaluating shoes since Chris puts around 50-60 miles on them per week.  He recently bought a second pair to replace the old ones two weeks ago.  Chris finds that the Nike Zoom Triax+ provide a good amount of stability so it is comfortable to wear on both trail and road surfaces.  Also, these shoes have Flywire technology on them, making them much more lightweight than other shoes.  Chris says that this feature was a big influence on his purchase of a second pair.  

I interviewed him while we were doing a workout today.  We ran together for a 25 minute out/22 minute back run.  On the way back we started pushing the pace and eventually Chris gapped me by 20 seconds and we finished in 20 minutes.  Looks like Chris is back to his cross country form and ready to do big things during outdoor track.

Day 4: Asics GT-2160, Ray Gamache

Ray is a long distance runner on CNU's Cross Country and Track and Field teams.  His primary event is the 5k, where he excels.  He is also a very tough competitor.  Ray ran a 26:19 8k at the NCAA DIII South/Southeast Cross Country Region Championship despite fighting off injuries and only running 3-4 times total over the month prior to the race.  During the upcoming outdoor track season he will be taking on the 3,000m Steeple Chase with hopes of adding another event to his arsenal.

Ray wears a pair of Asics GT-2160.  He originally bought his first pair in that series in 2004, the first year he took up running.  He learned about these shoes when his dad, a big Asics fan, gave him a magazine with an article about the Asics GTs.  Ray continues to use the same series of Asics today.

He shared some key points about the shoes with me in an interview earlier today.  He said that the shoes are a little heavy, but they are higher mileage.  This means that they don't break down fast and you can use the same pair for multiple months or high volumes of miles.  Also, the Asics GT-2160 are stability shoes, so they stop him from pronating when he runs and help to correct some of his running mechanics.

Ray uses the Asics GT-2160 for every type of run, but every once in a while he uses spikes for speed work since they aren't as heavy.   He prefers the blue and white ones shown below!

Day 3: Brooks Launch and Nike Zoom Victory, Matt Winkler

600: 1:23.78, 800: 1:53.00, Mile: 4:26, 5k: 16:22

Matt Winkler provisionally qualified in the 800m for NCAA DIII Indoor Nationals at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier on March 5th with a time of 1:53.00, ranking him 12th overall for Division III.  He had to sweat out the decision of the NCAA as they calculated how many athletes they were able to take for each event.  Winkler made the cut and now he will be representing Christopher Newport University in the 800m at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio on March 11th!

This national bound athlete prefers to run in Brooks Launch.  He continues to use the Brooks Launch because they were a reliable shoe that held up on the trails during cross country.  They also hold up very well on long runs on pavement that go up to 90 minutes.  Winkler uses them for road running and has put at least 200-300 miles on his current pair.  

Since Winkler is going to be running at Nationals on Friday, he shared with me that he uses the Nike Zoom Victory as his competition shoe.  He races in the Nike Zoom Victory because the shoe has a rigid form for the 800 which is his primary event and he said that most middle distance runners wear this shoe.  He also uses this spike for any fast workouts because the shoe grips the track very well when he goes around the corners on the 200 meter indoor track.  He said that, "This shoe allows me to generate power with each stride I take since it grips the ground and the shoe has a snug fit that keeps my foot from slipping around inside of the shoe which has been a problem with some of the previous pairs of spikes I have used in the past."

Winkler highly recommends both of these shoes for middle distance runners.

Day 2: Nike LunarSwift+, Wilson Bever

Wilson runs events ranging from the 400 meters to the 8k during cross country.  He just got his Nike Lunarswift+ about three weeks ago.  So far Wilson says that he is very pleased with his purchase.  The last pair of shoes that he used for running were the Nike Free Run+.  He reported that with those shoes he had a hard time running on rough and rocky terrain because of the reduced padding on the bottom of the shoe.  With the sturdy and durable bottoms on the Nike Lunarswift+ he is now able to run on any type of surface without any complications.  Wilson uses these shoes for any type of run off of the track such as progressive, moderate, and tempo runs, while sticking to spikes for his track workouts.

Wilson had a few different reasons for why this shoe stands out from his perspective.  When talking to him about how he liked the shoes, he said that the heel was curved more then his past shoes which makes his stride landings feel more natural and reduces discomfort.  Also, the cushioning is great for running and extremely supportive.  Wilson wears neutral shoes, and believes this is a good choice for similar runners.

When talking about a downside to this shoe, he said that it took him a week to break them in.  This was because he wasn't used to the amount of cushioning they provided so the shoes felt weird to run in at first, but once he got used to them he hasn't had any problems.

Day 1: Nike Air Pegasus+ 27, Corey Lofton

Corey has had the Nike Air Pegasus+ 27 since the beginning of the Indoor Season (December).  He has faced the unpleasure of having stress fractures in the past that turned out to be devastating to his cross country and track seasons.  Ever since he has started using the Pegasus+ 27, he has not had any further problems or complications related to his previous stress fracture.  Corey uses the Nike Air Pegasus+ 27 for both long runs of over 75 minutes and repeat 200's.  He said that these are probably the most durable shoes that he has ever used since they lasted an entire Indoor Season of workouts and high mileage.  

The key features that he likes about these shoes are that they have the capability to work with the Nike+  chip, allowing him to keep track of his mileage and the fact that they have responsive cushioning in the shoes that provide a more comfortable stride.  

Corey said, "I've been injury free since wearing them [Nike Air Pegasus+ 27] and recommend them for anyone who wears neutral shoes.

I Want The Nike+ SportWatch GPS

Workout: Day Off!

I've had a hard week and I'm still coming off of some kind of bug that I picked up 2 weeks ago.  Today I took a day off from running to allow my body to recover and to focus on schoolwork.  I figured since I didn't run today, I'd talk about an upcoming product that I'm really looking forward to, the Nike+ SportWatch GPS powered by Tom Tom.  

Over the summer I purchased the Nike+ Sportband since I wanted to keep track of my weekly mileage.  It was really convenient since I didn't have to remember how many miles I had run, I could just look right at the band and it would tell me how many miles I had run that week or in total.  I used the band all the way up until I went back to school for the Fall semester.  I really enjoyed the features that it had.  You could always just use it as a watch when you weren't running and I loved the fact that you could upload your runs online.  When you plug the sportband into the usb drive on your computer, it would shift all of the information from your band and duplicate it onto Nike's online servers where you could check out your runs and view your friends information.  I enjoyed that part just because one of my friends on the Cross Country Team had one and I would always try to put more miles in per week then he did.  The Nike+ Sportband was great, but the upcoming Nike+ SportWatch GPS is looking a lot better with much easier to use features.

The Nike+ SportWatch will allow users to upload the GPS information.  Unlike the band, the watch will show you exactly where you ran to on a map, allowing you to track your running route and giving you incentive to run further on the same route the next time.  On the SportWatch you will be able to see your pace and miles run at the same time instead of only being able to view one option at a time on the band.  This is a much needed upgrade since you had to look down and switch every time you wanted to know your pace or miles.  Also, the pace and mileage are much more accurate with the Tom Tom GPS upgrade.  Click on the picture of the Nike+ SportWatch and click Stay Tuned to receive emails about further product information!  I can't wait til this comes out!

Running In My Nike Lunarswift+ Down Memory Lane

I've had these Nike Lunarswift+ shoes since the beginning of my indoor track season (December), so just about 3 months.  Since then i've ran about 400 miles and close to 300 in these shoes.  They have held up really well and continue to be the shoes that I use for the majority of my runs.  

Today, on one of my last days off for Spring Break, I had a long run workout.  I decided to run 60 minutes.  Typically I have a usual running loop that I run twice when I do runs around 60 minutes, but I decided to run somewhere where I haven't tried to run before.  I started down my neighborhood and when I exited it I broke to the left like I usually do.  I followed the road and where I usually turn right, I kept straight.  I ran for about 25 minutes and made it to Bells Mills Park, the cross country course that I ran on for 4 years in high school.  I ran the first 800 meters of the course just to see if anything had changed, but everything was the same.  When I ran there in high school I only broke 19 minutes for the 5k two times.  When I was in high school I never imagined that I would one day run under 16 minutes for the 5k and under 27 for the 8k.  

The Lunarswift+ felt great on the run, but I've put a lot of miles on them.  I'm going to upgrade pretty soon.  Maybe the Nike LunarEclipse+ ...

Run Attempt: Nike Lunar Kayoss

Nike Lunar Kayoss
Workout: 45 Minute Run w/ 10 minutes at Tempo Pace

I just got these shoes as a present for my birthday.  I was really looking forward to testing them out on a run.  I came back to school and met up with some members of my track team to do a workout.  These shoes seemed a little stiff when we first started running.  As the run progressed and we started the tempo, I noticed that these shoes were striking the ground in a very heavy fashion.  The Nike Lunar Kayoss are a training shoe, not a running shoe, and that was apparent when trying to run in them.  We finally rounded the corner to school and finished our workout and I drove back to my apartment.  Looking back on my run today, I would not suggest the Lunar Kayoss for running hard paced workouts in, but if you are new to running, these shoes might be a suitable starting point.  I would not recommend wearing these shoes for over 15-20 minutes of low to moderate paced running.  On the other hand, if you play other sports or are looking for a shoe to wear to the gym then these are definitely an option for you!

Welcome, First Post!!!

I run Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field, and Outdoor Track and Field at Christopher Newport University.  Also, I was a member of Indian River High School's Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field, and Outdoor Track and Field teams for all four years of High School.  I have participated in events ranging from the 200 meter dash, to the 8K, to the Javelin throw.

I will share my daily workouts on this blog as well as post pictures of the different running gear I use for my runs.  I will give my reviews of the gear I use and show you where you can buy the gear.  I'd love to hear your opinions about the gear, any comments you have about my posts, and i'd love to have you tell your friends who are interested in running about my blog.  I hope you find it informational and helpful!
